Blind spot: How universities create unemployable graduates

40% of Nigerians with Bachelor's Degrees don't have jobs. If you are a graduate in Nigeria, the odds of being unemployed or underemployed are higher than if you had a primary school certificate.

Those were some of the statistics that the Q2'2020 unemployment report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed.

It makes you wonder what the fuss is with tertiary education; after all, without it, you are more likely to land a job. But before jumping into such conclusions, it is important to understand why graduates are out of jobs. 

First, the NBS does not measure the quality of the jobs that graduates get in comparison to those with primary school certificates. Understandably, many graduates will not want the jobs that primary school certificate holders will accept.
