Unpacking the freemium strategy for African businesses

The allure of free things never gets old.

There's just something about "free" that gets people excited. Free food, free carpool to work or even better, free money. Not everyone wants to spend money, and even if they have to, a discount here or a price slash there goes a very long way.

So, when Netflix recently launched a new plan in Kenya—which allows registered users to watch a few flicks on their app for free, I reconsidered the possibility of being a Kenyan citizen.

Free access to TV shows and movies? How is this possible? Will the company incur losses, and if so, how do they plan to recoup them? With these sorts of questions running through my mind, I began a search quest and stumbled on the term freemium.
